Fri 20 May 2011, 19:00, by Edenne Fournier & Bryan Lefebvre, at Mekic: (Map)

Thu 12 May 2011, 19:00, by Javid Musevi, at Atwater Library: (Map)
If the task of philosophy is seriously concerned with the sense (meaning) of essential words (philosophical and poetic), then with regard to translating those words, we are prompted to ask the following questions:How is essential translation possible? How and what is the "relation" of translation to language, history and hermeneutics? In what direction and enactment, translating could meet hermeneutical responsibility?By staying away from any theorizing and linguistic or scientific approach, the path taken will be the direction of hermeneutic phenomenology to show translation itself as a philosophical question.Accordingly translating essential words (philosophical and poetic) as a very unique occasion of grasping and experiencing of essence (Wesen) of language will be discussed .Our first instance for showing this occasion is German philosopher, Martin... more >>

Thu 5 May 2011, 19:00, by Farhad Karbassi, at Bistro Burritoville: (Map)
Since the 19th century, there are records of the term "pseudoscience" which has affected human life throughout the history. From phrenology (between which and holocaust it is possible to trace a lineage), to the wave of alternative medicine and quantum mysticism, one can observe the widespread belief in pseudoscience in people. In this presentation, science and pseudoscience will be defined, and the characteristics of each will be listed. Some examples of pseudoscience will be given and among them "homeopathy" and "the law of attraction" (with a brief review of the movies/books "the secret" and "what the bleep do we know?") will be talked about more in details. Also the psychology of belief in pseudoscience will be discussed. به نظر می‌رسد که زندگی‌... more >>

About us

CaféLitt is not a place; it is a gathering of minds. We are a group of mostly Persian young students, scholars and professionals who gather every Thursday evening around 19h00 in a café to discuss various subjects and share different ideas, ranging vastly from history to science, from literature to fine arts. We started these gatherings on Jan 18th, 2007. Each week, one of us takes the responsibility of presenting a topic (in Persian, English or French) for about an hour in a subject s/he is intimately familiar with or has an expertise in. Afterwards, the evening turns into a discussion forum and all members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask their question(s) and share their points of view.
CaféLitt is open to all comments, suggestion, collaboration and new ideas. CaféLitt provides an unparalleled opportunity for learning about culture, science and philosophy in a relaxed and friendly environment, and for sharing your knowledge and expertise with like-minded members of your community.
CaféLitt is officially registered as a non-profitable group and is a nonpartisan, nonreligious and nonpolitical entity.
