Date: 7 Feb. 2008
Presentation by : Reza Assasi

Reza starts the session with an interesting introduction on fire on Iranian Mythology and mentioned some poems of Shahnameh about the discovery of the fire by Hooshang and talked about the symbolism of fire and SADEH celebration.

The session continued with a hot discussion on the movie Persepolis and many questions on the advantages and disadvantages of the movie for Iranian nation outside of their country.
We can continue the discussion here on Comment box.

Comments:

This session, someone come up with an interesting question that if you want to make a movie on Iranian culture or society what will you make? Specially those who think Persepolis shows a dark view of Iran.(the discussion can be in English or Finglish)

Pasha at Fri 8 Feb 2008

Sorry! Just to add another question. We have talked about it in a session in Cafe lit. and Mehdi also mentioned it this session,Why a writer write? I mean Do you think the writer and Artists create the masterpieces as a duty or the masterpieces are something that come to the mind of the artists spontaneously?

Pasha at Fri 8 Feb 2008

The question was asked at the end of a long discussion to conclude that Persepolis is an autobiography and not a movie about Iranian cultures. This point was the justification of who support the movie. So I think this question wasn’t pertinent in the atmosphere of discussion atmosphere. But it can be treated as an individual question.

Thanks Pasha for leaving the discussion open...1. A movie about Iran; Marjan Satrapi has made a movie about how she sees Iran. I will make the movie as I see what's going on... and x and y with their views... I want to say here it is the story of " Har ke az zanne khod shod yare man..."There is not a unique manuscript...2. Art... Some believe that duty of art is to criticize the society... But we should remember that the first duty of art is to satisfy the creator... Art is successful if it satisfies the artist...

Hi!I think at last I asked the question, and I didn't want to justify anything. This was really a question for me, not just about Perspolis, but it contemplated other Iranian films as well.Anyway, thankyou for leaving the discussion open.I personally think that as this film showed a general image of iranians life, the "negative" images have been compensated with positive images, and formed an almost balanced story at the end. This was the point that I haven't seen in most of other films about Iran shown in Europe and North Amercia.

If one day,I wanted to tell a story,I would try to be fair and show the different styles and contradictions in the society beside each other,so that it doesn't imply a negative effect and besides doesn't show a 100% positive (unreal and unrealistic) image.

About us

CaféLitt is not a place; it is a gathering of minds. We are a group of mostly Persian young students, scholars and professionals who gather every Thursday evening around 19h00 in a café to discuss various subjects and share different ideas, ranging vastly from history to science, from literature to fine arts. We started these gatherings on Jan 18th, 2007. Each week, one of us takes the responsibility of presenting a topic (in Persian, English or French) for about an hour in a subject s/he is intimately familiar with or has an expertise in. Afterwards, the evening turns into a discussion forum and all members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask their question(s) and share their points of view.
CaféLitt is open to all comments, suggestion, collaboration and new ideas. CaféLitt provides an unparalleled opportunity for learning about culture, science and philosophy in a relaxed and friendly environment, and for sharing your knowledge and expertise with like-minded members of your community.
CaféLitt is officially registered as a non-profitable group and is a nonpartisan, nonreligious and nonpolitical entity.
